Hello and welcome home. This episode of Welcome Home is brought to you by DVC Rental Store. Thank you for joining us on episode 359 of Welcome Home, a Disney Parks and Vacation Club podcast. I’m Tom here with Trevor. How’s it going, Trevor? Hey, pretty good. Hopefully you had a good 4th of July and of that. tired. it Yeah. Yeah, I can imagine. I know you i know you were busy. For for us, Canada Day was in the middle of the week, which was kind of interesting. Yeah. I mean, because it’s it’s the 1st of July. and Yeah. yeah um that mean, that happens before July. 4th of July sometimes, too, right? yeah Yeah. But, yeah, the funny thing is, is, like, yeah, you know, if those holidays are, like, in the middle of the week, it’s usually, like, you know, the the holiday comes up, but you kind of have, like, the weekend to recover from it. But when the holiday is on the weekend,
01:17.52
Speaker
It’s usually worse because yeah it’s like you do the holiday and then like, and I don’t have like, I don’t have time to like recover from it. Right. So. Well, and that’s, that’s what’s nice about it being on Saturday. So I, I had a, I had a bunch of people over my house. And so we, my My wife and I really enjoy like throwing like parties and having friends over and and and stuff like that. And, you know, we we just haven’t done it in a long time. You know, ever since we we had my daughter, mean, we have parties all the time pre-kids, right? Like pre-having a kid parties all the time. It was great. And and I’m not talking like, you know,
01:51.90
Speaker
Like college parties, you know, like just we just like having people over, like having people over and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. We used to do the same stuff too. Yeah. Yeah. We, we had this amazing Halloween party we would do every year where we, where watched scary movies all day and like literally all day. We’d have people come at like, you know, 11 o’clock and we just watched scary movies literally all day. night and And that was a great, great thing. But we we kind of stopped doing those things. Right. and And so now we decided to, you know, to to do that again for Fourth of July. And that was great. It was great. It was. it But it was also like the first time we’ve had a party at our house where we’ve invited other families who also have kids that are friends with my daughter.
02:29.02
Speaker
And that’s a whole different thing. It is a dynamic for sure that you kind of, you you realize quickly, like how you do things with your family and then like, yeah you know, accommodating other families it can be challenging. Like even, even you know, for, for myself, like, you you know, me and, me and my brother, yeah you know, we both have our own families and, but he, so I have, i have a son, he has two daughters and the dynamics are very different between our households. Like, just just on that alone. Like, like he he obviously has, like, way different things he has to deal with that, you know, I’ve never had to deal with. And then also on top of that, too, is, like, their interests are totally different. So it’s like, you know, getting kids together is, like,
03:13.62
Speaker
You know, my when my son was younger, he used to like he would he would hang out with his cousins and whatnot. But then a kind of hit age where he’s like, i don’t have anything common with them. And now they’re like their interests are like fencing and taekwondo. And my son’s like, I don’t know. like yeah yeah Yeah. Yeah. It’s interesting. And then, yeah, you know, you know, a bunch of people in a house. I get how that can be chaotic for sure. Yeah. Well, and I kind of decided because it had been a long time that I was going to go a little all out.
03:41.62
Speaker
And because that, I decided I think I did. I mentioned the show last week. You mentioned the smoker. The smoker. yeah Yeah. So I was going to I smoked a bunch of meats, which was a fun new experience. And and then that came out pretty well. um But I also decided because it was ah it was 100 degrees here on Fourth of July, 100 degrees Fahrenheit. So which I don’t know what that is in Celsius. It’s way too hot. I know that. yes It’s somewhere in the Yeah, it’s it’s way too hot.
04:07.48
Speaker
So um I decided to buy a slip and slide which ah for the kids because I was like, oh, let’s keep the kids entertained and and not in the house. um You know, let’s let’s keep them not in the house. And, ah you know, so we set up a slip and slide.
04:21.37
Speaker
It was um it it it was a big hit. You know, I mean, we we the funny part was that this is I was busy cooking all day. You know, was I was cooking a lot. we i was cooking a lot of stuff. So I was not really paying attention to the kids. Right. I really wasn’t. Right. Yeah. I mean, when I guess when we were kids, were we ever supervised with a slip and slide?
04:42.90
Speaker
No, but I mean, there were a lot of parents, there were a lot of adults here, right? So like if I felt like, okay, I don’t really need to to supervise this, right? So I set it up and, you know, it it was all good.
04:53.43
Speaker
And um we had also, my brother-in-law had bought this um thing like to make giant bubbles. So it’s like ah it’s like a string between like two, like six. yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:04.38
Speaker
Right. And so, and he filled a bucket with, with like dish soap to do that. And I had, I had taken like, you know, like baby soap and put it in the bucket and like threw it down the water slide. So be nice and slick. Well, the kids at one point decided that it wasn’t slick enough and had went and got the bubble bucket and then went that down the slip and slide. And so all of a sudden of the end of the slip and slide is literally just like, it looked like, you know, yeah, it looked like if you, you know, put like the wrong kind of soap in your, in your washing machine. The fountain, soap in a fountain kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah, kind of. Yeah. And so it was um yeah, it was crazy. But it was it was funny. Like, I i wasn’t mad about it. Like the kids had a blast.
05:42.71
Speaker
i like they They couldn’t have had a better time. And so that was good. And then i also decided because, ah you know, again, I hadn’t done this in a while. I bought a lot of fireworks. that was the fourth of July. That’s right. Yeah. 250th. You know, why not? So I bought a lot of fireworks. And um honestly, it was it was we had a blast. It just it was so hot, though. It just it was miserably hot. We were all just dead at the end of the day. You know, i need to ask this. So, OK, around here, we don’t. we We don’t get fireworks because like you can’t set them off in the city without a permit or anything. So like people don’t buy fireworks around here. But I i have seen fireworks that have like ridiculous names to them. So I can ask what was the most like you bought in? What was the scariest, most ridiculous looking firework that you had in the bunch? Uh, I, I didn’t, I didn’t buy anything too crazy. Okay. So I bought, um, so I bought, I bought, uh, you know, mortars. i don’t know if you’re familiar with mortars. Yeah. Mortars. Yeah. Yeah. So I bought mortars. Candles kind of. Yeah. Well, these are, these are like real fireworks, right? So these are the ones that shoot all the way up in the air and then the big, you know, the big firework. Right. Yeah. So I bought those. I also had bought this like big pack of just assorted fireworks, which is, you know, uh, there’s Roman candles in there. There’s, you know, uh, um,
07:04.28
Speaker
ah ah fountains where you know they just spray sparks into the air there was uh these mini like mortars that were pretty cool um it was funny though because at one point we were shooting i can’t think of anything that was particularly scary to be totally honest with you but but at one point there we like people just started coming over because we we live on a cul-de-sac and so uh some people just kind of started coming over to like watch us shoot a fireworks so which is great and then like this group of kids comes up to us and they go Hey, we bought all these fireworks, but we’re too afraid to shoot them off. Will guys shoot them for us? was like, yeah, I will. was like, hand them over. Let’s do it. nice um You know, I didn’t find it. So they, and they bought good stuff, man. They was a good fireworks. So I was like, all right, yeah, I’ll shoot those off. That’s cool. And then um I found, oh gosh, I don’t know how I didn’t know this. It didn’t, this existed. Like didn’t, I didn’t, I never knew this existed until like I just recently, but,
07:56.57
Speaker
um I found these ones that ah they shoot up like a thing into the air. It does like a regular like little poof of firework. But as part of the little poof of firework, there’s an army man with a parachute inside it. Oh, that’s funny.
08:10.68
Speaker
Yeah. and after it explodes, he just kind of floats down to the ground. um And so I bought two of those because like I must have that because I mean, I’m sure you just like me. I was obsessed with those little paratroopers when i a kid. You know, he’s trying to find places to throw them off of. And, you know, because they were just so cool.
08:24.06
Speaker
And I was throwing them down the stairs or whatever. Yeah, yeah yeah exactly. You know, we’ try to find a cool place to throw those. Right. And so i was like, wait, so someone put that in a firework and it will, you know, just float down to the ground. And even some of them had like a stream of slick sparks going behind it as it came down. I was like, that’s the coolest thing. Anyway, I shot one of those off and and i I kind of knew this was going to happen. I was like, one of these is going to end up on of my neighbor’s roof. Like it’s going to it’s going to happen. yeah right It’s going to end up on someone’s roof.
08:50.74
Speaker
So sure enough, the second one I shot off floated over to my neighbor’s house. It landed on the roof, but then it fell off the roof and then landed in the bush. But like it’s a really high bush.
09:01.82
Speaker
And it just so happens that this particular neighbor is the fire chief of a local fire. Oh, no. Yeah. So I actually i ran over there ah because he he was obviously busy last night because there were probably lots of fires going on. Yeah. um And so I ran over there when I saw him pull in. i was like, hey, so there’s a paratrooper in your bush. And he’s like, what? I was like, yeah. And then I explained it to him. And then as i was explaining to him, he got ah like an emergency call to leave. So he didn’t care about it. But I it’s just…
09:30.23
Speaker
You know, is stupid stuff like that. But we had a great time. We shot off a lot of fireworks. It was it was it was a lot of fun. It just was so miserably hot. Like, it’s it’s miserably hot again today, um which, you know, it but again, it is what it is. But we we had a lot of fun smoking, you know, ah various meats and eating lots of food. We have way too much food.
09:49.94
Speaker
We have a crazy amount of food left over. I bought a five-pound apple pie from ah from Costco. Oh, yeah. Yeah, those are good. I’ve wanted to buy forever, but I’m like, what occasion do I have to buy a five pound apple pie? Yeah. Yeah. I have to say Costco is very much a love hate relationship when she when it’s you you like us, you know, being a family of three.
10:11.22
Speaker
Yeah. It’s like you see stuff and you’re like, oh, that would be good. But that serves like 12 people. So exactly need to like find other people. And like we do the same thing. Like, yeah, you know, if we have like, you know, when we do like family get togethers and stuff as well, we will ah we’ll go and buy stuff from Costco just for the sake of buying that thing from Costco. That’s exactly what it was. It was like it was like, I want to buy that apple pie. I got to have it.
10:34.81
Speaker
We never get to eat it. Those pies always look so delicious. Like they’re they’re really well done in Costco. They’re just too big though. They’re too big. And I just, yeah, it’s, but anyway, it was good. Um, so yeah, no, we had a great time. It was, it was a lot of fun. I’m just kind of tired. I’m wiped out. You know, we were shooting off fireworks till 10 o’clock last night. I, uh, you know, we finished up and we didn’t even clean up. Like it was just, it looks like a bomb went off in our house. Cause the kids just like, you know, tore through all the toys and stuff. My daughter has, and it’s just like, it’s a hot mess everywhere, but we’re, we’re going to spend today, you know, kind of recovering. oh the best part is this is really funny too.
11:07.96
Speaker
Um, you know, ah literally about an hour before the party started, my brother-in-law goes and opens our back door, you know, to our backyard and the handle snaps off like straight up snaps off.
11:20.82
Speaker
Like the screws broken, the broken it. And i was like, well, this isn’t good because we need to go to the backyard. yeah Like, you know, um so i i took i I took all the pieces off of it and there’s just, you know, there’s just kind of holes left in the door. Yeah. So I just I stuck i stuck a screwdriver in the in the hole and now that’s the handle for the moment. So cool. Well, because it was like I can’t go anywhere to go get fix this. Like everything’s closed. It’s 4th of July. Like i you know, got to MacGyver it.
11:52.44
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So it just was kind of fun. Yeah, it worked, though. and everybody Everybody came in and they were like, why is there a screwdriver in your door? And I’m like, oh, that’s the door handle for the moment.
12:03.61
Speaker
So anyway, ah yeah, so it was good. It was it was very eventful. It was a good time. We had a lot of fun. And, you know, it’s probably good that, like, <unk> you know You did all this now and you have plenty of time to recover because you know you do have a trip coming up to Disney. Oh, boy. Still a about to take a chat. new yeah Could you imagine, though? like like i i I never actually think about this because like usually, i guess, when I go to Disney, I’m like…
12:30.46
Speaker
we go around certain holidays, but it’s usually, we don’t go around big holidays, right? So it’s like, like, I can’t imagine doing like a big holiday, like 4th of July. And I mean, if you’re like at Disney for that holiday, like that’s one thing, but like, you know, doing like, like what you did ah yesterday, you know, they’re doing like a big, a big event and then being like, well, we’re packing up and going off to to Disney. Like, I don’t,
12:55.64
Speaker
i We still got a month. Yeah, like that’s what that’s what I mean. is like I feel like you need a certain amount of time between like… big events like that. I understand. You need recovery time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. i I still got a month. i I keep kind of forgetting that it’s happening in a month because I haven’t I really need to get on. You’ve been busy with other things. And yeah, I’ve just been super busy and I really haven’t I haven’t thought about, you know, like I said, I haven’t even bought tickets yet. I’m i’m like really behind on on everything here. So I need to do that. And I keep meaning to do it and I keep not doing it. But, I mean, you’ll you’ll find out when you get to the gate and you’re like, oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Tickets. That’s a thing I forgot. No, I’m going to do it.
13:34.97
Speaker
yeah Like, you know, the funny thing is, is like, i guess, you know, we buy tickets ahead of time as like, you know, make sure you’ve got your your place and all that kind of stuff. But, i mean, realistically, there is probably a lot of people that just roll up to, yeah like, you know, walk up to…
13:51.13
Speaker
um ah you know, customer service and just like buy tickets on the spot. My only thing with that, I guess, like you can do that, but I guess my, or, or okay, i guess my justification for why I always have my tickets at a time is I don’t want to waste time doing that.
14:06.10
Speaker
Right. yeah yeah Yeah. Because it’s like, you got to wait, you you know, you go up to the booth, you got to wait, you know, you know, and and I guess I have had to do that once or twice where it’s like,
14:16.70
Speaker
um Actually, yeah. Now that think about when I, one time we bought tickets and then we turned them into annual passes and it was like, we we knew we were buying the annual passes, but it was like we had to go to the booth and yeah do it. So it was like, like, oh like I just want to go in the park, but. It is, it’s such a pain when you have to do that. Like it is convenient to be able to do that, but I wish they had a process that wasn’t, you know. going up to guest services because it’s just… Yeah.
14:41.93
Speaker
it’s It’s just a pain. and Especially, like, if it’s really busy, like, the lines get crazy. Like, and it takes… It can take a long time. i think we waited for, like, 45 minutes at least once. But, um but yeah, anyway, it’s it’s, you know, I’m going to get on it. I swear. Actually…
14:58.10
Speaker
This does bring up a good and interesting question, too. I don’t know how this works because the the ticket booths are all out at the TTC now, right? Yeah, yeah. They still guest services at the front of Magic Kingdom, though. Oh, right. Yeah, I guess, yeah, I guess you would just go to that guest service I was thinking, like, you know, you’re staying at Bay Lake.
15:14.97
Speaker
Yeah. it’s like, you know, if you walk over, like, you’re not going through. And actually, it’s probably better for you anyway because the majority of people… are getting like they’re they’re hitting the ttc booths anyway yeah so the one at magic kingdom shouldn’t be as busy if you have to do that but i don’t know yeah i’m gonna i’m gonna buy tickets online anyway i’m not gonna wait but i’m just i just haven’t done it yet it’s on my to do list you could buy them while you’re sitting at the airport or well i’m not going to the airport of driving but yeah or we’re driving yeah yeah i guess well you know while you’re driving you know get your get your wife to buy tickets while you’re driving and yeah No, I’m going to do it before then. But I am. I’m going to do then. I’m just saying you got options. I know. i’ve got I do have options. I am going to do it beforehand, though. I pray they swear. it’s just i just haven’t done it yet.
15:59.34
Speaker
like I’m going to buy it from our friends over at Keyholder Vacations. um but yeah think yeah yeah Yeah. Actually, that’s that that is a good point, too. You’re dealing with like, yeah you know, because what was it? There’s like touring plans. Obviously, Keyholder Vacations all do things.
16:15.16
Speaker
Yeah. That kind of stuff. um yeah I used to play it from Undercover Taurus, but now that Keyholder does it, it’s, yeah you know, it’s ah prior to, before Keyholder Vacations started doing it, um I, you know, I would have done it through Undercover Taurus, but. Right.
16:31.80
Speaker
um But, you know, now it’s, ah it’s ah it’s easier just to do it through them, so Yeah. And I mean, they also have like… that they like the There’s like the point swaps options and stuff too. Like I guess i would…
16:45.98
Speaker
If I had extra points, I would maybe be looking at that too. Actually, I know, guaranteed, I’ll be talking with Keyholder Vacations for um our trip that we’re planning because I think I mentioned this on the Discord that I do want to stay at Helios. I know it’s not Disney, but it’s, you know, it’s Disney adjacent.
17:04.92
Speaker
And, ah you know, because we want to go to Epic Universe and all that. So, like, i’ I’ll be talking with them about about time figuring figuring out, about you know, a point swap for, you know, a stay at Helios or something.
17:16.06
Speaker
Yeah, gotcha. i got Yeah. gotcha Okay, well, but anyway, um we don’t have a lot on the rundown today, which is fair. mean it is a holiday week. Yeah, it was a holiday week. So I understand that, you know, it’s there’s not a ton going on. So, um yeah, but it’s okay. there’s there’s There’s still a couple interesting things, you know. It’s not that there’s nothing, right? so i I really like this first one that you put on here because Oh, my gosh. I will admit um I’ve not…
17:46.23
Speaker
or i think I think I’ve done American Adventure once. Like, I… Yeah. and And it’s just because it’s not… at Like, for me, it’s not an attraction that I prioritize when I’m in Epcot. And, i and you know you know, truth be told, I’m usually walking by the American Pavilion because I figure I’m in America and I want to go see all the other countries. The same way that I do with Canada. Like, I guess I’m not playing favorites here. It’s that I’m like…
18:15.13
Speaker
I like i I want to see all the other pavilions. So, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. i Listen. But the thing is, I guess I’ll say, yeah you know, this this behind the scenes of the American adventure.
18:28.12
Speaker
Is crazy impressive. And yeah, made it made me think like I didn’t re or I guess I didn’t realize how much went into it, but it’s obvious that there is a lot going on in that show. Yeah. Yeah, so this is really interesting because I’ve done i’ve done it a couple times. And in the american event the show in the American Adventure is actually really good. it’s’s it’s really It’s a really well done, you know really kind of cool show. Yeah, it’s it’s a lot of good history and yeah stuff, right? yeah Yeah, being the nerd I am, though, especially about the Imagineering stuff, like I’ve always known…
19:00.95
Speaker
how they do the how they do it how they pull it off right and i’ve always you know heard about it right and and know about how it works but i’ve never seen it before and i’ve always wanted to see it like it’s always been one of those things that i’ve really wanted to see because you know you can have a concept in your head of how something works but seeing it physically work in real life is a total different thing and for those that don’t know there i think A lot of people probably know this if you dig dig deep into this stuff. And if you haven’t seen the American Adventure, it’s, you know, maybe hard to conceptualize. But, you know, basically there’s, you know, a big stage and a big screen. And then there’s these set pieces that kind of pop up from underneath the stage.
19:41.18
Speaker
And the way that they do it is they, they have these basically giant, like, <unk>t know how to describe it. There’s these huge, like platters of, of different scenes that are ah like on these moving platforms that will come in and and move in it and it moves up each scene as it’s time for it to, to come through. And then it moves that entire scene, ah you know, away from, from the stage. So like it, It almost like is like a shifting set of platforms that that move in and out depending on the scene.
20:15.03
Speaker
the The way the Imagineer described in the video is um picture an elevator on its side. Yeah. that yeah like ah so so each of the each of the scenes is like their own um compartment inside of the elevator.
20:30.30
Speaker
Yeah. but The whole mechanism, that like the thing that’s sliding them along is, it’s literally a giant elevator that’s like, so it’s it’s like it’s almost like it’s stopping on floors and each floor is…
20:42.58
Speaker
is Is a different scene. Is a different scene. and then it comes up and then goes back down. And yeah, and yeah like like you said, yeah, seeing it and understanding like like the nuance of it, like even, you know, pointing out like, you know, they have like sensors to make sure that like if something malfunctions that it it clears yeah what it needs to. Because I was like, I was like, oh, yeah, that’s impressive. And it’s like, oh, yeah, if something fails, like,
21:04.63
Speaker
that’s catastrophic. It’d really bad. yes it’s It’s very impressive. yeah Well, and the and the the actual show sets, ah they they are they are stored when they’re not being used. They are underneath the seats that you sit on, right? So they actually move underneath the seats. And it’s it’s almost like the ah the wireless track systems you see in a lot of the rides nowadays. That’s kind of how these things move around. They’re just these giant platforms that just move, and they’re almost, they just kind of,
21:31.29
Speaker
And then as, the you know, it’s time for the scene, it pops up. i I’ve always wanted to see this, you know, and the fact that I, that they put out a video about this is awesome because I’ve, I it like, I don’t think I was ever going to get to see it, you know? like and like And it explains the escalator going into the attraction too, because I never like.
21:50.97
Speaker
You never understood why it’s so much higher up. I thought it was odd. Like, you know, because for a lot of attractions, it’s like you walk in and they do, i I don’t want to say they do a better job in other attractions, but, but I guess they kind of do like, like when I think back on like how ride cues work and stuff and even like, even things like the haunted mansion in Disneyland that like it goes underneath the berm and stuff like that. Yeah. It’s like, they do a better job of hiding in, but it’s like, that one’s like, you come in, it’s like, oh, I don’t see an escalator anywhere else in the parks, but here’s an escalator.
22:27.29
Speaker
And the but but then also, yeah, like you said, to that point is the reason part of the reason is for is that the entire ah the entire combined set is underneath the seats. So exactly. Yeah, exactly. So it’s I mean, I would highly encourage you to go watch it if you’re into these things. i you know, as as Trevor and I are, but it’s and the the most amazing part of this, though, honestly, is is not even i mean, it’s it’s what they’ve accomplished here. But the fact that they designed this in the 80s, I mean, this was this This is 80s tech that they figured this out with. And it’s incredibly complex. I’m just I’m kind of surprised it’s not down more. it’s with Even the the animatronics are they’re a model that was made in the 90s. Yeah, they’re not they’re not even like current gen animatronics, which again, you know, speaks to how impressive they were even for the
23:18.33
Speaker
the the era that they were they were made in. But, yeah you know, to to that point, too, is, you know you know, they said that they actually did a rebuild on a couple of the animatronics, which um i i wouldn’t be i wouldn’t be surprised if at some point they, like, it the hard part is, is that American Adventure is, it’s not like a flagship attraction.
23:40.66
Speaker
Right. yeah Like it’s, it is a good attraction. Like you said, it’s kind of, it’s kind of ah a bit of a hidden gem in that sense. And like I said, you know, you know, even for me is like, I, I fully admit that it’s like, there are so many other things higher on my list that I’m like, I want to go see these other shows and see these other attractions, but thinking, or, you you know, watching the behind the scenes, you know, I, I kind of want to go and watch it now just from that different lens of like,
24:05.53
Speaker
yeah You know, marveling at the technology of it, not just like the story that’s being presented. Right. So, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It’s I it’s it’s actually it’s I like I said, I’ve always felt like it was kind of underrated as an attraction. I think I remember the first time I saw it, I was like, wow, this is awesome. Why do more people do this? This is so good and well done. And like. You know, i mean, you know, it’s just it’s and that and when you see how it’s done technically, it’s just it kind of blows your mind and that anybody was even able to conceive of this. And even like the Imagineer that’s explaining it, that he’s like, yeah, as a mechanical engineer, this is like the coolest thing ever to make. Yeah. Because the way it works is so mechanically like insane. Like it just.
24:48.38
Speaker
Yeah. And also to that. And I also do this to myself too, where, you know, we’ll be on like that side of a world showcase and it’ll be like the middle of the afternoon. It’s crazy hot.
25:00.89
Speaker
a You know, you know, you’re just talking about like, it’s been, it’s been really hot. It’s like, you know, why not go watch American adventure and, you know, sit in the AC room for a while Because it it is a long show too right? Like it’s… yeah It’s a decently long show, yeah. Yeah. I want to say it’s… 28 minutes. twenty Yeah. so So kind of like like same same kind of pacing as like Carousel of Progress, right? yes yeah Yeah. So it’s like, you know, hey, you know, that… You know, the smart version of me would say, like, if it’s really hot, you know, you know, stop, go in there, sit down, you know, you know, take a break, stop walking for a bit. But and but then the other side of me that’s like hyped up is like, I’m going to walk around to Mexico and get on.
25:45.27
Speaker
get on yeah yeah we always call it three caballeros but yeah yeah three caballeros or yeah um that’s really not the name of it though it’s a grand fiesta tour thank you yeah I was like fiesta what is it fiesta yeah um but yeah like part of me is like I’m always like go go to Mexico because, you know, it’s inside. It’s like, but the American Pavilion has that too. Like, why am I not doing that? So, yeah. It’s hard because it’s like all the way in the back of Epcot too. so But that’s what I’m saying is that, like when you’re back there and it’s like you, you know, you
26:18.46
Speaker
people don’t realize that it is a space to actually like stop and rest and, and again, enjoy a show and, yeah yeah you know, something that you wouldn’t expect that that’s kind of what makes it a hidden gem is that i like, just agree.
26:32.94
Speaker
It’s a very weird thing that like there there is certain attractions that kind of get, shoved in a corner is the best way to describe it. Like, it’s just like nobody knows that they’re there. and And it’s, it’s a weird thing that happens at Disney from time to time. Like I can think ah i can think of a handful of attractions over the years that it was like, i had no idea that this attraction existed. And then it was like, you just kind of like stumbled or you like you turn a different direction than you normally do. And then it’s like, oh, there’s like, there’s this whole thing over here that I didn’t realize was here because I just always went the other way. Like, yeah. I feel like Epcot and World Showcase specifically is is classic for that, right? Like, there’s so many things in World Showcase, like, you don’t even know we’re there. And and i think I think specifically the American Pavilion is, like, for me, obviously, you know, I’m i’m a big fan of, like, Japanese culture and all that. So, like, going to the Japan Pavilion is like, oh, wow. Like, but it’s just a Mitsukoshi in there. It’s not, like, it’s just shopping. there’s there’s not
27:31.94
Speaker
There’s not a ton of other stuff. there is There is, like, displays and stuff at the back. But… But it’s not like a really fleshed out pavilion like some of the other ones. And then on the other side, it’s Italy, right? Yeah. Which again is like, yeah you know, Italy is like, oh, you know, it’s very interesting culturally. It’s, you know, and hey, if you want like really good pizza, go Viannapoli and all that. Yeah. And then you’ve got the American pavilion sandwiched in between.
27:56.70
Speaker
That’s like, so, so like I said, it’s kind of that, it’s that mental block in my head where it’s like, I don’t want to see this because there’s these interesting things like even just bookending that pavilion.
28:07.74
Speaker
But the pavilion has a very interesting show to it that you shouldn’t overlook either. Right. So, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, one time i we wandered just through like the Moroccan Pavilion, which was – there’s, like, so much stuff back there. Like, it’s just – it’s not, like, anything, like – you know, there’s no, like, ride or show or anything. But there’s just, like, a lot of details and things back there that you can find. And, and I mean, even just stuff like the Cinerama ones, the like the um the Impressions, the De France and the the Canada for Arjad.
28:39.61
Speaker
Yeah, and Reflections of China, those, like, if yeah you haven’t gone on the, like, they’re just little shows, but they’re they’re still kind of cool and enjoyable, you know? yeah i I have done all of those. It’s just I don’t, they’re not on repeat for me, I guess is the thing. but Yeah, yeah. Yeah. i Like i said, I think the the the American Adventure, though, like you said, yeah you know, watching the video, it’s like, oh, like, i i knew there was a lot going on here, but, like, in my head, I didn’t, like, put the pieces together of, like, how…
29:10.65
Speaker
how crazy it actually is. yeah But, but you know, now that, ah now that i’m I’ve watched it, I’m like, oh, that’s actually like a very interesting piece of like Disney technology, right? That, that, you know, they’ve, you don’t see that other places. Like I’m, I’m trying to think of what would he even be like,
29:29.54
Speaker
A close to example. Yeah. Yeah. There’s no comparable that to that thing. It’s it’s crazy. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway, I just was so excited to see that. i When I saw that video, i was like, oh, I need to watch that right now.
29:40.86
Speaker
Like, I must watch this. Yeah. Yeah. yeah that That kind of, I know they got a lot of feedback that, or like just looking at that video, you know, a lot of people like more behind the scenes videos, please. So i I actually like that content more, or that for me is a little easier than like, I know,
29:58.55
Speaker
you know, there’s the ah behind the attraction stuff on Disney Plus. Yeah. The thing about like this video is it’s, it’s short enough that I don’t feel like I’m committing like an hour of my time to watching it, which I know is like, I know that speaks to me and, you know, my, my lack of attention span. Yeah. But, but, you know, sometimes like,
30:22.44
Speaker
I don’t need a full hour of backstory of the ride. I just need the technical piece of it. Yeah, show that. Which, that’s all this is. Like, they’re not… I mean, he does get a little bit into the backstory, but I…
30:33.94
Speaker
I very much like, like, show me just the technical nitty-gritty stuff of it. And that’s that’s what this is. and and And, yeah, I really like it. so Yeah, it was it’s definitely very cool. i i Yeah, check it out. It’s on YouTube. I also like this unscripted series they’re doing, too, where they’re just showing, like, Imagineers, like, ah building the like you a it’ building the rides, like, behind the scenes. Like, they have one…
30:54.16
Speaker
that’s out for Rock and Roller Coaster with with the Muppets. i didn’t I wasn’t going to bring it up since we talked about it so much leading up to it, but they they they did have they do have an unscripted video out for that, and it is pretty interesting to see them like painting and like testing audio and like showing how all that stuff works is pretty cool. Did you know Rock and Roller Coaster’s open?
31:12.46
Speaker
I’m sorry. ah All right. Well, can like why don’t we do our ad here? And then we only have a couple of topics today. So this is going to be pretty quick, but yeah, for sure. This week, our episode is brought to you by DVC rental store, which is a key holder vacations company that offers magical vacations at incredible value.

That’s three eight two seven three six eight And you speak to them, be sure to let them know that Welcome Home sent you. All right. By the way, I, you know, just I think I’ve talked about on the show. I i am renting out points through DVC Rental Store. And ah the the person I rented my points out to canceled. they So they actually canceled on me. And they but ah they have that cancellation guarantee thing. And so they found somebody else to take the reservation. So, nice yeah. So it was actually but you still you still get your money for the rental regardless. It’s just exactly they figure all that out. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So anyway, ah so Trevor, Disneyland ah announced that they’ve welcomed their one billionth guests, which is kind of crazy to think about. I mean, it’s so been a long time. Yeah, it really is.
32:32.57
Speaker
I mean, listen, it’s been ah it’s been a long time. Right. So it’s been open for seven years and, you know, about to be 71 years. And ah yeah, so they welcome their billionth guest. And what I like about this is that this was a kid that was going to Disneyland to celebrate his birthday, I guess.
32:47.93
Speaker
His day’s birthday. And so he got to be the the billionth ah guest. Oh, man. Yeah. Like, but that that’s a memory. That’s a Disney crowd right there. That that that kid, I don’t know. if if If I just, like, walked up on Disney and they were like, congratulations, you’re the the millionth person or the billionth person, like…
33:09.91
Speaker
Like as a kid, like you would just feel like king of the world for that day. Right. Seriously. Yeah. yeah I mean, especially since they made like a really big deal out of it. Like it was, all and you know, they published all sorts of stuff about it. This kid’s in all this, ah all these different, you know, like ah on the Disney Parks blog here. And I think they’ve also done like press releases and stuff. And it was in the news, you know. a whole thing. So this and this kid got a lot of they they put up a new sign at the and the train station. It looks like this is population one thousand one million one billion. Wow. and built One many zeros. Yeah. One billion. Gosh. Yeah. yeah
33:43.83
Speaker
Population one billion. Yeah. ah And so, and this kid also got like, ah they I think they got like a VIP tour. and i would i would expect so. I mean, that because yeah because, you know, this is on the same level as, um yeah you know, the the kids that got the the very first entries into Disneyland who they they got lifetime passes. Yeah, they got those lifetime passes. And I believe i believed i saw the the one the the one guy still goes like regularly. I think he’s like…
34:13.67
Speaker
He’s got to be like in his eighty s or 90s this point. He’d have to be, right? Yeah. Yeah. Which, I mean, is, again, that like, it’s crazy to think about, but it’s also very cool that like, i you know, I hope that they, or yeah, actually, it says right here, you know, they received a vib VIP tour guide for the day. So they got a plaid yeah for a day and then they got a tour of Walt’s private apartment.
34:35.22
Speaker
um That’d be really disorienting to show up, though, and be and all of a sudden they’d be like, hey, yeah you get a VIP tour for the day. Like, what? i was That’s not what I was planning today, but cool. And you know what the hard part about that is, though, is, all okay, i guess for the for the kid, you you know, that’s just like a very cool core memory that they’ve got. Yeah, yeah.
34:57.30
Speaker
But I would be so disappointed if I showed up and it was, and I guess without like knowing context or anything, but if it was like, oh, you know, you know, we’re going here and, you know, here’s Walt’s private apartment and you’re like, cool. But you like, you know, if you don’t care as eight year old that. you don’t, if you’re not like a huge fan of and you don’t understand the like, the, the history there, the history of it, you’re just kind like, cool. But then it’s like the next time you show up, it’s like, oh, I don’t get to look at Walt’s apartment this time. Like, if you brought my, the next, Trip is going to be disappointing. If we brought my daughter into one apartment, she’d be like, what, what, why? She would just have no interest. Yeah. My son’s the same way. Or I shouldn’t say like he, he kind of like, he got what, like we were getting excited about certain things, but he’s also like, you know, you know, he’s kind of grown up with it and he’s like, yeah, that’s just,
35:50.65
Speaker
something you guys are interested in he doesn’t see it quite the same way so yeah that’s very much an adult thing for sure but i think it’s i mean again i think i think it’s just a a matter of like yeah you you know you you will never appreciate as a kid just as like you know i me taking trips to disneyland as a kid i i appreciated them but i see them very differently as an adult and i’m sure my son will be the same way when he gets older is that he’ll be like Oh, yeah, I get what you know what we were doing was you know you know pretty insane at the time.
36:22.46
Speaker
I think that speaks to Disney in general, right? like You appreciate Disney as a kid differently than you do as an adult, right? And I think you realize that more and more like the older you get, right? like Because when you’re young, you appreciate it, you know, the rides and the characters and all that stuff. But then when you get older, you you really appreciate the details and the history and the, you know, that those kinds of things a lot more than you do when you’re a kid.
36:45.21
Speaker
Yeah, of course, and the rest. Of course, the rest still. Yeah. So, I mean, yeah. But it’s it’s it’s just a different, it’s funny how that kind of changes, you know? Yeah. yeah yeah Your priorities change, right? But. Yeah.
36:56.45
Speaker
Yeah. But good for that kid. Yeah. Good for him. ah Disney cred for the rest of his life right there. So good for him. um But, ah you know, last but not leap well least here, I guess, is his new Haunted Mansion merch, Trevor.
37:12.95
Speaker
I can’t. I have to talk about this because I love Haunted Mansion, as you do. and i mean, we already talked about Halloween stuff, so we’re here already. Well, it Haunted Mansion a year-round thing. I don’t god consider that. Yeah, you’re right. because because Especially because of the fact that if you don’t go and see Haunted Mansion now in Disneyland, by the time you go in the fall to see it, they’ve already turned it into Nightmare Before Christmas, which I, yeah.
37:37.99
Speaker
I’m going to have to plan. When I plan a Disneyland trip, to have to plan around that. Like, I’m going to have to plan to be there during the real Haunted Mansion going on. I’ll be honest, um for um our trips usually were in March for that reason.
37:51.96
Speaker
because we Because we did some fall trips and we enjoyed it, but we actually made a conscious choice. was like, March is, you know, it’s for us, I guess, you you know you know, climate-wise,
38:03.81
Speaker
It’s not too hot. It’s also not like… like Because it can get cold in there. the The same way like Florida in January gets cold. So so March was kind of that sweet spot. and And again, also, there’s no overlays going on, which… yeah yeah you know and If you like the Nightmare Before Christmas, I know i i know i hate on it a lot because…
38:22.39
Speaker
i just I just wish it wasn’t so long. yeah Yeah. And I would, like, riding the Haunted Mansion on Halloween as proper Haunted Mansion, I feel would be, like, a peak thing.
38:33.98
Speaker
But I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. Like, I don’t see them… don’t see them stopping to do the Nightmare Before Christmas stuff, which I guess… It does seem to be popular.
38:44.95
Speaker
Yeah, I guess. I guess it’s hard because it’s just like, it’s it’s not for me. is the I get it. ah but But either way, we we have all this merch for Haunted Mansion, which… Okay, just off the bat, Trevor.
38:58.97
Speaker
Yeah. what What are they doing with the models here? Okay, I understand we’re doing like the Haunted Mansion thing, but like… Like the the just like the one guy is just like. disease So so in to to speak in my son’s terms, he’s aura farming is. What is that? I’ve never even heard of that. You’ve never heard the term aura farming? No. What does that even mean? So so so that’s like, OK, I guess in in Disney equivalent would be like um um from um Tangled. What is his name?
39:32.37
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Why am I blank out? But, um, the smolder. Oh, okay. The smolder. Okay. Oh my gosh. What is, see this, he just looks like an emo kid to me. That’s where I would go in, in my generation’s parlance, right? Like he just looks, yeah he’s just like, oh yeah. Flynn Rider. So, so yes yeah so, so the, so the, that,
39:51.13
Speaker
Aura Farming is like trying to like looking cool for the sake of just like building up your reputation, I guess, would be the that that’s the term that kids use are teenagers, young adults use that term. or And I said my son and his friends have used that term.
40:08.89
Speaker
When I use it, they immediately look at me with disgust because I should be using their terms. But this kid is clearly aura farming. <unk> I have never heard that before. That is, wow, I feel old. You can look it up. um Anyway, the merch, though. So they’re leaning heavily into the wallpaper, right?
40:27.54
Speaker
Into the wallpaper design, you know, that I think everybody knows at this point. um which is that that you know the purple wallpaper with ah you know the different scary figures on them. um but they have So there’s like a little sweater here, and there’s just like a T-shirt ah that has Madame Leota on it, right? I’m trying to read what it says on it.
40:47.52
Speaker
Okay. Hard to read. Yeah. Send us a message from somewhere beyond. Okay. That’s what it says around it. That makes sense. Yeah. I like it. It’s like a cool, like, you know, stylized, like, uh, Madame Leota though. Like it’s, it’s got a cool thing going on there.
41:01.37
Speaker
The funny thing about this picture though, with her in it though, is the guy is wearing a shirt and the way he’s sitting, you can’t even see the shirt that he’s wearing. Yeah. It’s all, yeah. The the lighting and everything. yeah it’s not completely, it was not even visible.
41:12.95
Speaker
Yeah. Like what, why, why do that? Come on, be better. And just, just choices. Yeah. Yeah. But then there’s there’s a PJ set here that, you know, again, is like the wallpaper, which I like. I like I could, you know, I would rock that.
41:27.25
Speaker
That’s pretty cool. i Yeah. You know, you know, I think I’ve seen like pajamas that’s like this and it’s just like, yeah, of course. Why? Why wouldn’t I buy a Haunted Mansion wallpaper? i feel like I’ve seen these before. Right. Like these are not.
41:42.33
Speaker
Yeah. I feel like I’ve seen a version of these. Not not necessarily. or i guess they do it like, you know, they don’t do it every year, but they kind of like every couple of years they bring this kind of merch back. Right. Yeah. So, yeah. yeah Then then they have a ah they have a tote which has the singing heads on it. And i actually really like this tote. It’s cool. It’s got the heads. It’s got like the the outline of the Haunted Mansion. And this is Disneyland Haunted Mansion, I should mention. Right. Yes. because um Because the hat, when you get further down, there’s a hat that’s very clearly Nightmare Before Christmas. so Yeah. And then there’s also a um a the Hatbox Ghost. there’s like ah It’s a crossbody. Yeah. That is cool.
42:23.48
Speaker
I like that one. Yeah. I like that a lot. and And I like… I want to see more cross bodies. Like I hope that that’s becoming ah a trend because I really like I like my cross body for, you know, Disney or like the one I have is great for when I’m traveling to Disney, but getting like a proper Disney one would be even better.
42:42.87
Speaker
So. Yeah, and then there’s also there’s the ah the the the ah Ghost Host Butler. There’s a lounge fly mini backpack, which is, you know, it’s fine. It’s cool.
42:53.78
Speaker
And then as you mentioned, the Haunted Mansion ah holiday baseball cap, which is the wreath that’s got like the teeth in it. Yeah. yeah that the the It’s a pretty terrifying wreath if you ever see it on the ride. Yeah, yeah it is. It is.
43:08.09
Speaker
um We’ve also got some ornaments, which are pretty cool, actually. I really want this one ornament. Like, these ornaments of, like, the ah Madame Leota one. Yeah, the Madame Leota, that i like the the gargoyle bust one, or not bust, but gargoyles, and then the hatbox ghost.
43:27.38
Speaker
Yeah, hatbox ghost. um The third one looks like the bride, I think. Yeah, it is. Yeah, yeah it’s the bride. Yeah. And then yeah there’s also there’s also a little Mickey statue with ah one of the hitchhiking ghosts inside the dune buggy.
43:39.06
Speaker
Yeah, that one’s, that’s okay. The other ones are I just don’t know what it would do with that. Like, what am I doing with that? Like, i don’t I don’t know. I like it, yeah but what would I do with it? Well, and also, so so going further down, they have more of these, um they they’re just like little display figurines, I guess.
43:56.02
Speaker
Okay, but yeah these I would put out for Halloween because these are cool. these are the um These are the stretch room paintings, right? And as figurines, which I think is awesome. Yeah.
44:09.53
Speaker
So I’m trying to figure out who, or all right, Sally Slater, she’s in one of the paintings in the and the hallway after the stretching room. Yeah. So it’s, okay, so it’s so it’s the the the dynamite gentleman as well. Yeah, yeah, I wonder if that’s the, or I guess that is the official name because Disney’s saying it, but yeah. They are, yeah. The dynamite gentleman is, I like that. And then, yeah, Sally Slater is kind of an interesting character.
44:37.24
Speaker
one or I feel like they’re trying to like build out the like the characters more beyond like the the stretching room. ghost They totally are. Yeah, they totally are. There’s also um this. um Why? Why are the rubber ducks? and i Yeah, i’m I’m looking at these.
44:54.81
Speaker
um I listen, I don’t care. i like i mean, i will say I’m not I don’t I don’t I don’t care about the the the fact that they’re rubber ducks, but the Hatbox Ghost rubber duck is kind of hilarious. I’m not going to lie. Well, OK, the Madame Leota one, too. Like it’s like the head is like the crystal ball. And then and then these other two are again, it’s the bride. And oh, is that? No, who’s the other one? Is that supposed to be a hitchhiking ghost or? I think so. Maybe.
45:25.00
Speaker
It’s such a, I guess maybe rubber ducks have become ah a bit of a collectible thing. It kind of like, yeah it feels like in the same vein as like Funko Pops. It’s a big thing on the cruise ships, right? Where you hide ducks, but it’s not, you’re not like hiding, you know, ducks like this. You’re hiding just like generic rubber ducks. Like just rubber ducks. Yeah. Yeah, like, so I don’t know.
45:44.70
Speaker
i mean, I don’t know what this deal is. right but This speaks to, I’m sure, if i if i searched it right now on YouTube, guaranteed there’s somebody out there that has an insane rubber duck collection. but And this feels like it would go in that type of collection. Yeah, yeah. so I agree.
46:01.72
Speaker
Yeah. And then there’s there’s ah there’s a ah plush of of Sally Slater and also Squishmallows of the Three hitchhi chi hi three Hitchhiking Ghosts. My daughter loves Squishmallows, and she has way too many of them. and But I don’t think she would be into this. She doesn’t love the Haunter Mansion.
46:19.00
Speaker
ah So, I mean, you know, I guess I could buy them for myself. But what am I going to do with Squishmallows? I got no use for such for such things. Yeah. Yeah, they’ they’re like throw pillows, but not.
46:29.85
Speaker
Yeah. Which again, it’s it’s fine. But yeah, same kind of thing. It’s like I see these things. It’s like, oh, that’s cool. And it like fits like a particular IP that I’m interested in. But it’s not something like the IP is good, but the item that it is is not what I want. Yeah. Yeah. yeah Then the only only other um only other thing here is on the other other article. They have a where the Werecat Lady limited edition doll.
46:58.46
Speaker
This is really just if you like to collect dolls. Like, honestly. Yeah. It looks just like a Barbie. Yeah, pretty much is. Yeah, pretty much is. Yeah.
47:09.46
Speaker
I mean, again, cool. Like that like I said, you know, they’re they’re trying to expand out beyond the… the standard characters, I guess, or the, like, yeah, I’m not, I’m not against them, like, bringing light to lesser known things in these rides because, like, I mean, honestly, Haunted Mansion, like, they could, they could make merch all day for Haunted Mansion with the amount of characters that are in the ride. And, and I’m here for it. So, you know, it’s one of the most, like, yeah, character filled rides. I feel like original characters anyway. So,
47:41.30
Speaker
Yeah, that and I feel like they need to do that and they need to do more Spaceship Earth characters. would like some of that. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Like they’re like throughout all the scenes, like there’s all kinds of things they could do with that.
47:54.90
Speaker
But yeah, what we going to need. Yeah. What we need is a refurb and then they would do it. Yeah. yeah the The thing is, is that it’s also the the the interesting thing is, you know, you know kind of back to the point of like talking about, you know,
48:05.66
Speaker
you know, like Disney for kids versus adults and whatever is that like do it like hitting some of those like, like deep characters that are like, like far into the ride or aren’t like immediately associated with the ride. It, it, it’s kind of a weird place where it’s like, you know, you know, for us that are fans of it, you get it and you’re like, Oh yeah yeah, you know, that’s for me. But then like, there’s a lot of,

there’s a lot of people that would be like, I don’t like You know, if you’re just looking at this merchant, like Epcot, right? Like imagine if you’re saying connections and you just see like random figurines from a ride that like you didn’t even clock that those characters were in the ride.

Like, I can see where, like, Disney has to find that balance of, you know, you know appealing to, like, the the obvious ones. And that’s, I think, where, you know you know, we kind of get annoyed with, like, you know, everything. It feels like there has to be, like, Mickey Mouse in it somewhere. And it’s like, but there’s so many cool things, like, in the ride. But that’s for those of us that are, like, really fans of the ride.
49:07.00
Speaker
So, you know, and yeah and they can’t just appeal to, like, the hardcore fans either, right? Like, it’s… Yeah, agree. It’s a weird thing, but yeah, i’m I’m kind of glad that, you know, they’re they’re clearly like, a lot of this stuff is very clearly pointed at, you know, hardcore fans of Haunted Mansion.
49:25.88
Speaker
But um yeah, I also think, you know, I think it’s it also leaves room, like i said, yeah you know, that, you know, maybe if this stuff sells well enough, we’ll start seeing more of it, too, which is that’s all I’ve asked for is like, like just stop doing like the the generic carbon copy stuff and give us some interesting stuff. And it seems like Disney is doing that. so Yeah, for sure. Yeah. they they They definitely have been, like, highlighting a lot of those lesser lesser characters from rides, you know, recently. Yeah. Even the ah the gargoyles in the Haunted Mansion. Like, I didn’t think of those as, like, an ornament.

Speaker
But, that like, that makes sense. Like, it’s a good ornament. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. right. All I think that’s it for this week. Yeah. Short, short, short for short episode. Yeah. Which, I mean, hey, that’s fine because, ah you know, it’s summer and, you know, to Tom’s recovering from a meat coma from eating too much. And yeah.
50:24.79
Speaker
